Support NKU veteran and military-connected students!

The Veterans Resource Station (VRS) aids and supports our veteran and military-connected students to ensure their academic success and easy transition back into civilian life.

Your gift will directly impact these students by positively influencing their educational success, the prosperity of their families and the vitality of our region.

Transitioning back to civilian life can be difficult for many.

  • 76% of veterans indicate their transition was stressful (
  • 46% of respondents reported suicidal thinking (American Psychological Association)
  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death Post 9/11 for veterans (VA)

Support services and programs that foster a sense of community are critical in making the process successful. According to America's Warrior Partnership, over 20% of survey respondents reported an improved sense of well-being when engaged with services within 3 months and over 79% reported an improved sense of well-being when staying engaged with services longer than 3 months. Our office was recently featured on WCPO for our Green Zone Brigade training service to educate educators on supporting military-affiliated students.

Within the military community, a flashlight is often referred to as a moonbeam. From writing letters home in the deep jungle of Vietnam, to special operations reading maps in Iraq or reading a book in a tent in Afghanistan, a moonbeam has always been a constant and valued source of support.

The Moonbeam Fund — just like the flashlight — is an essential source of support for NKU veteran and military-connected students. The Moonbeam Fund supports services, programs and events that help students overcome the challenges of what can otherwise be a frustrating transition process.

Contrary to popular belief, not all veterans and service members receive full tuition coverage, or book stipends and often pay the difference out of pocket.

Recently the VRS was asked to provide support to a Vietnam Veteran who receives no military educational benefits and was unable to cover the cost of his books.  Although the VRS was unable to support him, he is taking his final course and will graduate in December 2022, achieving a lifetime goal!  In fact, he will be the first in his family to graduate college.

Contributing to the Moonbeam Fund would ensure future students can access the necessary resources needed for graduation and empower the VRS to activate an immediate solution.

Light the path and help eliminate these types of barriers for our NKU veteran and military-connected students by making a gift to The Moonbeam Fund today.

Thank you!

Building Blocks

Will combine with other donations to build the Moonbeam fund to appropriate levels to offer grants and scholarships

Graduation Fee

Could cover the $50 graduation fee for a student or provide a one-time supplemental book grant for a student.

Could fund one textbook for a student.

Extra Course Costs

Could cover the additional cost our Active Duty service members, non-KY National Guard members and Reservists who use the Federal Tuition Assistance (T/A) pay for a typical single course. This could also support the service members who do not qualify for 100% of the GI bill to offset extra fees and costs of materials.

Materials for a Semester

Could cover a semester of books for one student and cover additional fees that pop up.

Materials for Two Students

Could provide a semester's worth of books and materials for two students. This can also help supplement education costs not covered by Federal Tuition Assistance.
