Foreign Language Award for International Study

Since the Foreign Language Award for International Study (FLAIS) was initiated in 2005, around 115 World Language and Literatures (WLL) students have received funding to support short and long-term study abroad experiences. FLAIS is entirely donor-funded, and we are grateful to all who have donated in the past.

But our need is far from over!
Every year, new students apply for FLAIS funding in hopes of traveling abroad. Study abroad experiences are extremely beneficial to students but also a costly part of their education. Any amount of financial support can make the difference between a student being able to study language first-hand or not going at all. Funding is a key element in making this happen. In order to continue to send students on meaningful study abroad experiences, we are hoping to raise $1,500 with this year's Impact campaign.

Why support student travel?
For many students, a study abroad experience can transform their lives completely. One of the most obvious benefits of study abroad for students of other languages is that it can vastly improve their fluency in the language they are studying. Study abroad experiences also give students valuable direct exposure to other cultures, broadening their worldview and increasing their tolerance of others.  By supporting FLAIS, you are helping to give students the confidence and tools they will need to be the international leaders of tomorrow!

But don't just take our word for it...  Hear what some of our former FLAIS scholars had to say about their experience!

My study abroad year in Japan was a dream come true! When I wasn't studying, I spent a lot of time traveling with friends and experiencing the culture and nature. I wish for anyone interested in learning a language to travel abroad if they're able to! It's so much more fulfilling than just learning out a textbook. Thank you to FLAIS for helping me find my exchange!

Chloe spent a year abroad in Japan studying at Gifu University, one of our exchange partner schools.

"My name is Cayla, and I studied abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico, for a year. Studying abroad in Oaxaca was my very first time leaving the country, and the experience was both eye-opening and rewarding. I learned about Mexican culture from firsthand experiences and was able to improve my Spanish tremendously. I learned so much about myself and the world during my study abroad experience. I’m so grateful for the opportunity, and I hope that other students will be able to have the same opportunities and experiences that I had."

Cayla studied abroad in Mexico at the Facultad de Idiomas of the Universidad Autónoma “Benito Juárez” de Oaxaca through Arcos Learning Abroad

How can you help? Any amount of financial support can make the difference between a student being able to study language first-hand or not going at all. Funding is a key element in making this happen, and this scholarship is funded entirely by donations.  We hope that you will consider supporting FLAIS by making your best gift today!
