Since the Foreign Language Award for International Study (FLAIS) was initiated in 2005, 100 World Language and Literatures (WLL) students have received funding for study abroad trips. FLAIS is entirely donor-funded and we are grateful to all who have donated in the past.
But our need is far from over! Every year, new students apply for FLAIS funding in hopes of traveling abroad. Study abroad experiences are extremely beneficial to students, but also a costly part of their education. Our goal this year is to raise $1,500 to support a new group of global travelers.
Why support student travel? A study abroad experience can transform a student's life completely. Studying abroad offers WLL students the opportunity to be fully immersed in their language of study, which improves their fluency. These experiences also provide students with valuable direct exposure to other cultures, giving them the confidence and tools they will need to be the international leaders of tomorrow.
But don't just take our word for it... Hear what some of our former FLAIS scholars had to say about their experience!
"Over my four months in Marburg, I learned about the German language and culture, how students from other nations view their time in Marburg, and how some of these other nations work. Among these wonderful perspectives - and partly due to them - I also realized things about myself that I wouldn't have otherwise known. My time in Marburg did nothing short of fulfilling the stereotype that exchange programs are life changing adventures." -Jack Flesch, studied at the Universität Marburg in Marburg, Hessen, Germany
"The FLAIS funding benefited me by helping me cover day-to-day expenses and fund amazing adventures while I was abroad! For example, I was able to visit a Japanese student I had met previously at NKU in her hometown, as well as visit another NKU exchange student in Seoul, South Korea." -Jenna Crowell, studied at Musashi University in Tokyo, Japan
"I learned about a new culture while being able to improve my Spanish 100%. Overall I grew as a person completely. Studying abroad changed my outlook on everything and is truly a life changing experience that I recommend to everyone. FLAIS benefitted me because it did take the stress off of my shoulders while not working during my exchange." -Christina Caffrey, studied at Universidad de San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador
How can you help? Any amount of financial support can make the difference between a student being able to study language first-hand or not going at all. Funding is a key element in making this happen and this scholarship is funded entirely by donations. We hope that you will consider supporting FLAIS by making your best gift today!
