What is Juneteenth?
In June of 1865, enslaved Americans living in Texas learned that The Civil War was over and that slavery had ended in the United States - more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Because the word traveled slowly in rural Texas, the news arrived in some places before others. Because of this, the holiday celebrating this important event has been designated "Juneteenth."
About our Exhibit:
The Students in HIS 607: Exhibits in Museums and Historic Sites have been asked to create an exhibit celebrating Juneteenth for the Southgate Street School Museum in Newport, KY. The former school served as a "colored" school during segregation, becoming a landmark in the community. It is now the home of the Newport History Museum. The exhibit will be made of nine panels, tracing the history of the holiday from the first Juneteenth to the present, and will be used for the Juneteenth Celebration event during the month of June.
The purpose of this Juneteenth exhibit is to inform school children and the public about this great American Holiday. The exhibit will begin its educational journey at a Juneteenth celebration in Newport, then be made available to area schools in the fall. The exhibit will be showcased to thousands of school children in Northern Kentucky, allowing them to learn and express themselves on the subject of freedom in our country!
Make your best gift today to help visitors who see this exhibit understand that this event was a great step forward in creating the America we know today. THANK YOU!
