Last year, the Department of World Languages and Literatures set out on a mission to raise money to send more students on experiential study abroad trips. Thanks to a group of generous donors, we met our goal and were able to increase the amount of money allocated per student.
But our need is far from over! Every year, new students apply for FLAIS funding in hopes of traveling abroad. Study abroad experiences are extremely beneficial to students, but also a costly part of their education. In order to continue to send students on meaningful study abroad experiences, we are hoping to raise $1,000 to support this year's group of new travelers.
Why support student travel? For many students, a study abroad experience can transform their lives completely. One of the most obvious benefits of study abroad for students of other languages is that it can vastly improve their fluency in the language they are studying. Study abroad experiences also give students valuable direct exposure to other cultures, broadening their worldview and increasing their appreciation of the worldview of others. By supporting FLAIS, you are helping to give students the confidence and tools they will need to be the international leaders of tomorrow!
But don't just take our word for it... Hear what some of our former FLAIS scholars had to say about their experience!
"Studying abroad was a truly amazing experience that not only taught me the language but taught me how adaptable I really am. FLAIS made it possible to pay for airfare, insurance, and visa costs. If it weren't for scholarships like FLAIS, I wouldn't have had this opportunity." -Matthew Jent, studied at the University of Caen, France
"This was the first time I had the opportunity of leaving the United States and truly opened my eyes to the world! FLAIS helped take the stress off of my shoulders since I was not working during my exchange." -Christina Caffrey, studied in Quito, Ecuador
"FLAIS granted me the opportunity to create unforgettable memories." -Matt Priede, studied at Musashi University, Japan
"Because of FLAIS, I had the opportunity to expand on my German knowledge, immerse myself in the culture and grow family/friend connections with the people I met there." -Nicole Browning, studied in Munich, Germany
Any amount of financial support can make the difference between a student being able to study language first-hand or not going at all. Funding is a key element in making this happen and this scholarship is funded entirely by donations. We hope that you will consider supporting FLAIS by making your best gift today!
Thank you in advance for your generosity.
